App Integration in Conversational AI

Context

Generative AI systems are becoming orchestration layers that trigger structured workflows across connected applications. In an MCP-driven integration model, the user provides intent in natural language, and instead of responding purely with text, the system invokes an external capability and returns a structured, task-aware output inside the conversational surface.

Design Solution

The system initiates an external app workflow through MCP. The output is a live, structured application card embedded inside the chat interface. It is a rendered application module embedded within the chat environment. It typically includes the identity of the connected tool, a visible system state (loading, processing, completed), and actionable controls that allow the user to continue or inspect the result in the originating application.

This pattern balances automation with visibility. The system state is communicated. This prevents the AI from feeling like a black box and instead positions it as an orchestrator of tools.

Design Considerations

Clear Intent-to-Action Mapping. The transition from user input to tool invocation should feel predictable and explainable.

Structured vs. Conversational Output. Operational tasks should be rendered as interactive modules, not plain text responses.

Tool Identity Transparency. Clearly indicate which application or capability is being used.

Execution State Visibility. Surface loading states, progress indicators, and completion feedback for asynchronous tasks.

Layer Separation. Maintain a visual distinction between conversational dialogue and system execution.

User Control. Provide options to open, edit, or continue the workflow in the source application.

Error & Edge Case Handling. Clearly communicate failures and suggest actionable recovery paths.

Scalable Pattern Design. Ensure the embedded module pattern can extend across multiple integrated tools consistently.
